9 Tips for Simplifying Your Life and Waking Up Truly Excited to Start Your Day

Puzzled?

Well, life’s a puzzle, that’s for sure.

It’s easy to be confused as to how to fit together all that you’re supposed to do, be and have every day.

And your life picture is fragmented. So many awkward pieces that just don’t connect. Despite your very best efforts you can only manage one small corner of your daily puzzle at any one time.

It’s time to discard those pieces that are spoiling your fabulous life picture.

It’s time to slow down. Breathe. Start again.

It’s time to simplify.

How to wake up truly excited to start your day.

1. Give away your second everything

Declutter your home of all the items that have somehow duplicated themselves while you weren’t looking. Keep just one of each item, give away all duplicates, and delight in the clear space created.

2. Delete 80% of your digital photos

Ditch unimportant memories and declutter your mind. Keep only the super precious images you would pay hard cash to have printed and framed to hang on the wall. Free up not just your device’s memory but yours also for great new experiences, allowing it to run leaner, faster, better!

3. Purge your icons, apps, links and bookmarks

Plug in to a distraction free environment by systematically removing all the non-essential distractions on your devices. If you haven’t used it in the last month, you can probably live without it. Your new streamlined experience will result in greater productivity and clarity.

4. Disappoint people early.

Simplify your commitments by contacting the last 3 people you said ‘yes’ to and apologize for extending the deadline or canceling altogether. You’re already overworked and overwhelmed and this will save you days of fretting over something you can’t fit in to an already overburdened schedule.

5. Simplify your social life

Politely cut off contact with people who are not benefiting your life, people who are causing you stress, wasted time or complication. Instead, free up your precious energy for relationships that matter to you and will move you forward in life.

6. Enlist the cooperation of others

Halve the time, stress and effort of completing tasks by cooperating and working with others who share similar mindsets, goals or values. Pool your skills and resources to build up a regular network for mutual simplification and enrichment in life.

7. Streamline every task

Simplify every time you undertake a task by missing out one step. Experiment with removing unnecessary parts of the process to achieve the same or near-same result for less time and effort.

8. Junk that half-finished novel

Clear out that book you started writing 5 years ago, that part-built website you haven’t touched in ages or that half-restored car that’s been sitting in the garage since you bought it. These distractions are just muddling your thinking of who you are and what you really want to achieve.

9. Identify your top 3 desires

Create clarity in your over-busy mind by identifying your three most commonly recurring desires. Take action right now to do whatever is necessary to move on with these. For instance, if you constantly think about being overweight, take one micro-step towards losing weight right now. Focusing on only a few, really important or pressing goals will create momentum and results.

Life doesn’t have to be a puzzle.

Juggling too many pieces of your daily puzzle will never let you enjoy the picture you dream of.

But decluttering your environment and simplifying your thoughts will allow you to ease through each day with way more energy and effectiveness.

Take back control of your daily puzzle by starting with the simple action steps above. Begin with one or two. Build in the others when you’re ready.

By swapping complication for simplicity you will create space to breathe, think, and enjoy your day.

Rekindle your enthusiasm for life right now and wake up truly excited to start your day.

    Lovely post Mark and Laura. I especially like 2 and 3 – it’s amazing how much extra ‘stuff’ we keep because it’s easy in terms of the digital world. I have 5k photos on my computer, taking up space I definitely need, and I am sure half of them are rubbish. Time for a serious declutter! Thanks for the great reminders :-)

      Absolutely – we have a motion detection camera for wildlife spotting and last time I cleared out 1.3GB of unwanted video!
