The 100 Thing Challenge: Is it Midway or Extreme?

Have you heard of the 100 Thing Challenge?

It is the popular simple living movement initiated by Dave Bruno to break free from the constrains of the American-style consumerism.

He started it as a personal challenge in which he cut down his possessions to 100 things only and lived on it for a year. The challenge resonated with so many people and it attracted a huge worldwide following.

It became a worldwide sensation, specially after Dave launched his book The 100 Thing Challenge.

The first time I heard about this challenge I thought it was radical or at least it was not common sense. It is not possible or easy for the mainstream to cut down their possessions to 100 things only.

And since I run a blog about Midway Simplicity that focuses on mainstream ideas for simple living, I held a case against this challenge and I was on the opposing side.

Then, one day I decided to buy the book and read it. I had an ‘open-minded’ inspiration. I said to myself, “At least you should be open minded and listen to what this guy had to say.”

Today, I have a confession to make.

The 100 Thing Challenge is in perfect match with the Midway approach. It IS a mainstream approach to simple living!

I know you might be shocked, but if you watched this new episode of The Midway Simplicity Show, you may change your mind.

I really like your blog, but would you also consider publishing written summaries of the episodes? I often don’t have time to watch them, but would like to know the gist…

Enjoyed the show. The one thought that kept coming to me while listening to the show was, “out of sight, out of mind”. As Dave suggested, the energy to deal with unfullfilled dreams/goals, unfinished projects, “what was I thinking?” purchases is overwhelming for most people. Simplifying by eliminating these items is beneficial on so many levels. Out of sight…Out of Mind.

This article shows that most of us are slaves to possessions at times. They things that we THINK that we need, we really don’t. If we focused on the things we need rather than what we want, life can be much simpler
